The Right Job

Whether you’re a recent graduate that’s new to the jobs market, or are feeling the need for a change of career, deciding what type of job would be best for you can be as difficult and stressful a decision as any. There are, however, various things you can consider to help make the process a little easier.

Aspirations
Many people have dreams and aspirations of where they see themselves in, say, 5 years time. If you’re one of these people, then your decision should be made a little easier. If, for example, you want to be an editor at a publishing house, then a good place to start would be by either doing a placement or internship at a publishers or looking for a creative job at a lower level. Jobs sites tend to offer a list of roles that come under a related sphere, so don’t be too regimented in what you apply to and are looking for – sometimes taking a job in an area related to what you really want to do is a useful stepping stone and shouldn’t be considered a compromise.

Interests
Whilst some people are lucky enough to have a clear plan or ‘dream’ to follow, there are just as many who aren’t as sure what they want to do with their life. This does not mean that these people should be panicking – not everyone enters into the job market with a clear-cut plan of where they are heading. If you don’t really know what you want to do, then why not try looking for a role that involves some of your interests? If you’re a bit of a film buff, then why not consider something in film journalism? Or if you have a passion for sports, why not train to be a fitness instructor? Then, if you decide it isn’t the career path for you, at least you’ll be indulging in your interests and hopefully, enjoying yourself along the way.

Something completely different?
If you’re still at a loss of something to do, or if you’ve been in the same job for the past few years and fancy a change, why not really test your limits and go for something completely different? Take a look online and you’ll find a wealth of jobs available, many of which you probably won’t have known even existed. You could also think about taking a job abroad –teachers, doctors and nurses (to name but a few) are in major demand across the world so if you feel like doing something completely different and don’t have the commitments to a particular country then this might be something worth investigating.

Whilst the world of job seeking can seem very daunting, take solace in the fact that many other people have gone through the same confusion that you may be experiencing, and that there are resources and people available to help guide you through the process.

Take a look at the Reed jobs site for more information (their career tools and learning centre are particularly useful) and to browse vacancies.
